Lansing Students Compete at University of Kansas Mathematics and Statistics Math Competition
On Saturday, April 13, 2024, third-grader Mosab Jornaz (3rd grade) and fifth-grader Mohab Jornaz showcased their mathematical skills at the annual Mathematics and Statistics Math Competition held at the University of Kansas. This event drew hundreds of K-12 students from across the region to compete in various levels based on their grade level.
The competition was divided into three levels: third through fifth grade, middle, and high School. Each level's exam reflected the mathematical curriculum appropriate for the highest grade in that category. Calculators were permitted, and the presentation of solutions was a critical component of the grading process.
The University of Kansas Math Department is known for its dedication to promoting mathematical excellence and awareness. Each year, it hosts numerous events, including workshops for 5th graders, math competitions for students in third through twelfth grades, and sessions with invited speakers. These events are part of the Mathematics and Statistics Awareness Month (MSAM) activities, organized in collaboration with the American Statistical Association (ASA). The full schedule of MSAM activities is available on their website.
The Mathematics and Statistics Math Competition is a valuable opportunity for students to engage with challenging problems, develop their critical thinking skills, and interact with peers who share their passion for mathematics. We are incredibly proud of Mosab and Mohab Jornaz for their hard work and accomplishments.
