February 7th STEM Night at Lansing High School a Tremendous Success
Lansing USD469 held its second annual STEM Night on Wednesday February 7th. This year's event was expanded to include educational activities for all grade levels (PreK - 12) and held at Lansing High School. The event was organized by our K-5 STEM teacher, Mrs. Suzanne Phillips, and featured STEM professionals from the community who shared their expertise with students and offered hands-on activities for attendees.
In collaboration with KCKCC Career & Technical Education and local trade professionals, the older students who attended were able to see and talk to different professionals from area businesses and gain a deeper understanding of what career options are available. The professionals shared their knowledge and experience with students, answering questions and offering insights into their respective fields including cosmetology, HVAC, multimedia production, and computer support. Students were also able to learn about automotive mechanics, granite distribution, plumbing, home remodeling, and welding from local trade professionals.
For our younger attendees, there were various stations that encouraged hands-on learning, including "Make It and Take It" and "Make It and Break It" stations where students built STEM structures and either took them home or broke them down when they were done. Lansing High School Robotics students and teacher Dr. Anne Krebs also had a station that allowed students to operate a robot using various commands.
In addition to the hands-on activities and interactions with professionals, there were raffles and prizes.
The district would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Mrs. Suzanne Phillips and our staff and students who volunteered to help make our STEM Night a success. STEM Night is just one example of the many initiatives and programs that Lansing USD469 offers to support STEM education.
