REMINDER: 2023-2024 Transportation Department Changes
We wanted to take a moment to remind our parents and guardians of a change in our transportation policy for the upcoming 2023-2024 school year.
As you may know, the state of Kansas reimburses our school district for every student who lives more than 2.5 miles from their school. Lansing USD469 has previously covered the cost for students who live under 2.5 miles from their school. However, due to the increase in the price of diesel fuel, the rising costs of running our transportation department, and a shortage of bus drivers, the Lansing USD469 Board of Education voted to implement a fee for these students during the December 2022 board meeting.
Starting in the 2023-2024 school year, there will be a transportation fee of $340.00 per student with a cap of $400.00 per family, for students who live under 2.5 miles. This fee equates to $1.82 per day to ride the bus to and from school.
We have included pictures that designate the 2.5 radius and walking zones below. The distance is calculated as the shortest road route from the flagpole of your child’s school. If you are unsure whether or not your home is within 2.5 miles of your child’s school, you can calculate the distance by using Google maps or contacting the Transportation Department via phone (913-250-0749) or email (Janine.shields@usd469.net).
We want to reassure you that there will be no charge for students who qualify for free and reduced lunches, for school district staff students who utilize the district bus shuttles, or for students who are assigned to special needs buses. Walk zones will remain in place as they are today.
The transportation registration fee for all students will remain as they are today - $25.00 during registration and $35.00 for late registration. For those who live under 2.5 miles from their student's building and are paying the Transportation Fee, this registration charge is included in that amount. Bus capacity will be limited to 50 students per bus and will be on a first-come first-serve basis, so we encourage you to register early to secure a spot. Registration will be open between June 1 - July 31.
We understand that this change may come as a surprise to some of you, but please know that it was not an easy decision for the Board of Education to make. We appreciate your understanding and support as we work to ensure that our transportation department continues to provide safe and reliable transportation for our students.
Thank you for your attention to this matter, and please don't hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.
