Mrs. Mills's Third-Grade Class To Be Featured on KMBC-9 News at 4, 5, and 6:00 pm Tonight! (PLEASE SHARE!
Lansing USD469 is thrilled to share that Mrs. Mills's class will be featured on KMBC-9 News at 4, 5, and 6:00 pm tonight (January 10th). The third graders presented at the January school board meeting to ask the board to consider funding to help fix the third-grade playground to make it more accessible to all students. Click here for PDF of the presentation.
Three students in Mrs. Mills's class use wheelchairs or walkers and are unable to play on the playground due to the substrate being made of rubber chips. The students are also unable to use most of the playground equipment because they have ladders or stairs.
The class noticed the issue earlier this year and came to Mrs. Mills for help in fixing the problem. Mrs. Mills then presented the students with a challenge to think of a dream playground that would be accessible to all of the students at Lansing Elementary School. Our STEM teacher, Mrs. Phillips, helped the students design it with five pieces of equipment that would allow all of the students to play together.
Once their design was complete and the students had become experts on the pieces of equipment chosen, they presented to administrators in December and then at the January board meeting for the school board and community who were watching.
KMBC-9 picked up the story and will feature it at 4, 5, and 6:00 pm on January 10th. If you miss it, watch this website, and we will share a link once it is on the KMBC-9 website. LES Principal, Dr. Jennifer Kolb, is working on a grant that would cover half of the cost, but the price tag is still incredibly steep to build their dream playground even with the grant - a whopping $500,000! It is the hope of Mrs. Mills's class that the school might receive funding from area donors to help pay for a portion of the cost of updating the playground.
