Congratulations to Lansing's Secondary Teacher of the Year, Ms. Maeve Bolin! Ms. Bolin has worked in the Lansing School District for the past thirteen years and is currently the AP English Language & Composition and AP English Literature & Composition teacher. She is also an instructor for the Teaching and Training CTE pathway which includes Teaching as a Career class and field opportunities within the district.
In addition to being a teacher in our district, Ms. Bolin is the ELA department chair, a member of the Lansing High School Building Leadership team, and a member of the district Professional Development Committee. She is also serving as the LHS Student Council sponsor for the second year in a row.
One of Ms. Bolin's nominators offered an example of how she stands out as an educator in our district, "Ms. Bolin had her students choose a New York Times columnist to follow for five weeks and allowed her students to write their own columns about a topic of their choice, mimicking the style of their columnist. Not only did students stay up-to-date on news through this, they also learned to expand their writing and gained insight into what their peers care about."
Also noted in a nomination for Ms. Bolin was her ability to connect with students on a personal level. "Ms. Bolin genuinely cares about all of her students. She sent holiday cards to them and regularly checks in on them to ensure they are succeeding. She is a mentor to many students and many trust her to help address problems in their lives, whether related to the classroom or not."
"I am honored to receive this award from the district and LEF during this school year," said Ms. Bolin. "Every teacher in the district has adjusted to what is best for our students, and the lessons I gained from this year have already made me a better, more compassionate teacher. I am grateful for all of the support I have received from the community, administration, and my colleagues."
Ms. Bolin was surprised with the award on Monday, May 3rd by Superintendent Dan Wessel, School Board President John Dalbey, LEF President Christine Aus, LEF Director Sharon Burns, and LHS Principal Rob McKim. Lansing Educational Foundation also named Jessica Kowalewski Elementary Teacher of the Year and Kristen Dilka and Janine Shields as the two Educational Support Staff of the Year.
