Lansing Elementary Hosts Black History Month Program Originally Scheduled in February Thanks to Teacher, Wykeya Taylor (VIDEO)
Lansing Elementary School students were able to attend a Black History Program on Monday, May 9th, thanks to second-grade teacher Ms. Wykeya Taylor. The program was initially scheduled during Black History Month in February and was canceled not once but twice due to snow days. Despite the setbacks, Ms. Taylor persevered and was able to get the following performances rescheduled for the program in May:
- Solo singing performance by Daysia Reneau: "Lift Every Voice and Sing"
- Dance Solo by Ziara Stowers: "Dreams"
- Spoken word by Maliyah Reneau: Maya Angelo's "Still I Rise"
- Saxophone Solo by Trinity Young: "Blue Bossa"
- Solo Singing performance by Daysia Reneau: "Change is going to Come"
The program focused on the representation and diversity associated with African American Life through music/dance/spoken word.
"I wanted to keep students engaged by having them experience how feeling and emotions can be represented and demonstrated through the community and their age group," said Ms. Taylor. "I would like to send a special thanks to Mrs. Debbie Pixley-Clark, all the performers, and LES for making all this possible."
