Congratulations to Our Students Who Competed in 60th Annual Topeka Model United Nations
Lansing High School students competed in the Topeka Model United Nations Conference on February 28th and 29th, and we are proud to announce that our team won several awards.
This is the 60th year for the Topeka Model United Nations Conference (TMUN), which had a twist this year. In years past, it has been held in Topeka, Kansas, but the venue was moved to the University of Kansas Student Union this year. Since Covid, TMUN has struggled to find an affordable venue. According to their website, "The newly formed Jayhawk Hospitality Department was very enthusiastic to host our conference. This change will benefit our organization and your schools, and we are very excited about this future partnership."
Lansing High School brought eleven delegates, nine high schoolers and two middle schoolers, who participated in the high school councils. There were two high school councils - General Assembly I (GAI) and General Assembly II (GAII).
Congratulations to all of our students who competed at the event. Jack Corrigan, an officer for the middle school council World Council I, served as secretary. Lansing High School delegates were Lexi Ackors, Bruce Blankartz, Matthias Erickson, Jackson Jackson, Dylan Light, Jacob Mitchell, Christopher Silva, and Bayne Yoakam. The Middle School delegates were Anna Brown and Mia Jaskowiec.
Each delegate submitted a country position paper and resolution, with 19 resolutions for each council selected for debate at the conference. Remarkably, all three of Lansing's resolutions were selected and passed!
Lansing walked away with several awards earned:
Best Delegates:
- GAI: 1st Place Bayne Yoakam representing Vietnam
- GAII: 4th Place Jackson Jackson representing Yemen
- GAII: Honorable Mention Jacob Mitchell representing Syria
"More than anything, Model UN was a great way for me to practice public speaking, all while learning about the world and international politics," said LHS Senior Jacob Mitchell. "Model UN has helped me grow as a speaker, leader, and member of our international community."
