Mrs. Laurie Holden's fourth grade class has Greg Tang Zoom math enrichment lesson!
Fourth grade teacher, Mrs. Laurie Holden, has been incorporating mathematical methods and enrichment products for her students this school year from New York Times best-selling math book author, Greg Tang. In addition to being an author, Greg Tang offers workshops, institutes, and conferences across the United States and overseas through his company, Creative Smarts, Inc.
"After the nation went to Continuous Learning, Greg stepped up his virtual in-services and support to teachers," said Mrs. Holden. "I was so excited when he announced on his Twitter account that he was offering free enrichment sessions for teachers. I was ecstatic when my class was selected for an enrichment session with Jared Saavedra."
Mr. Saaverda, or Mr. "J" as the students call him, played several enrichment math games via Zoom with our Lansing Intermediate fourth grade students, including a round of boys vs. girls Jeopardy. During Jeopardy, the class competed using "Kakooma" and "NumTanga" and boys took the win. Next, the class played a round of "Expresso", which is a game that requires students to use four numbers to create a top target number. They were able to use any operation (addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division) to get to the target number.
Once they had played a few rounds, Mr. J gave them a challenge question to work on over the weekend. Mrs. Holden will present the problem to them during their Zoom "Math Talk" meeting on Monday to see if they can find the three ways to solve the problem. For our math whizzes out there, here is the challenge problem:
