Director of Teaching & Learning Miles Azzeh's Academic Spotlight: Ms. Shalee Eilderts
Our Lansing USD 469 teachers are incredible at engaging our students in fantastic learning opportunities to reach their full potential every day in our district. To highlight and bring recognition to this great work, Director of Teaching and Learning Miles Azzeh will be regularly shining a spotlight on a stand-out teacher through "academic spotlights."
March 11, 2022 Academic Spotlight by Mr. Miles Azzeh:
Two of my favorite aspects of education took place in Shalee Eildert’s second-grade class this week: Developing a love of reading and experiential learning! Ms. Eildert’s decided to add a bit more to her students’ memories while engaging in “Read Across America” week in her class:
“On Monday, we dressed as scientists, read the story Sticks by Diane Alber, we discussed the problem, theme, authors purpose and our favorite part, then we built a STEM tower in teams.
On Tuesday, we dressed like rock stars, read The Legend of Rock, Paper, Scissors by Drew Daywalt, and wrote about how we are rock stars and artists. Then we got to paint our own rocks while we enjoyed popcorn as a snack.
On Wednesday, we had pajama day, read Pyjama Day by Jason Chin, focused on the main idea and author's purpose, enjoyed cookies as a snack, and read by flashlight in our pajamas with blankets and a stuffed animal.”
Ms. Eilderts had plans for a tourist day on Thursday, making brochures of the redwood forest, reading Redwoods by Jason Chin, dressing like tourists, and eating chips, but unfortunately, the snow day threw a wrench into the plans. Nevertheless, this week’s activities will undoubtedly leave a lasting memory for the kids and help them fall in love with reading.
Great job, Shalee!
