Meet Our New LMS Staff!

We’re excited to introduce Adam Bremer, who joins Lansing Middle School as an 8th grade Science and Literature teacher!

Adam has called Lansing home since 2008 and is already a familiar face in our schools. He spent the past six years substitute teaching throughout the district and also serves as a soccer coach. At Lansing High School, he coaches C-Team boys soccer and serves as an assistant coach for the girls soccer team. He also coaches two teams through Lansing Parks & Recreation.

Adam earned his bachelor’s degree in Food Science from Kansas State University and his master’s degree from Emporia State University.

Outside of school, Adam enjoys building and pyrography (wood-burning art), reading, and spending time with his family. He and his wife have four daughters in Lansing USD469 (a senior, sophomore, 7th grader, and 5th grader) along with quite the collection of animals: a Great Pyrenees, 13 chickens, three budgies, and a bunny! He’s also an avid national park visitor and has been to 34 of the 63 U.S. National Parks.

After years of working with Lansing students as a substitute teacher and on the soccer field, Adam says he is most excited to finally have a classroom of his own.

“I have worked with many of these students in other classrooms or on the soccer field, and now I am ready to work with them in the classroom.”

Welcome to your new role, Adam!

Meet Our New LMS Teachers!

We’re excited to introduce one of the newest members of the Lansing Middle School team!

Originally from Germany, Natasha Martinez grew up in Bitburg and Trier, Germany’s oldest city, and speaks German as a first language. She attended the University of Maryland and Kansas State University and is joining LMS as a U.S. History teacher.

Outside of school, Ms. Martinez enjoys photography, reading history books, playing Pokémon and video games, Dungeons & Dragons, and traveling, with Japan next on the list! A Lord of the Rings fan, Ms. Martinez also has a couple of especially interesting fun facts: she has been skydiving several times and co-wrote and published a travel guidebook about the main island of Hawaii.

This school year, Ms. Martinez is especially excited to make U.S. History relatable for students through hands-on lessons that get them excited and engaged with the content.

Welcome to Lansing, Ms. Martinez!

Scientific notation is taking Lansing Middle School students around the world!

Eighth-grade math students in Miranda Cote’s class recently worked on a “Travel with Scientific Notation” project, choosing a country to research and comparing its data to the United States using scientific notation.

Students applied their math skills to real-world data by multiplying and dividing numbers to compare population sizes and examine how populations have changed over time.

To wrap up the project, students turned their research into travel brochures or posters, created either by hand or digitally using Canva.

Great work by Mrs. Cote and our 8th graders applying classroom learning in a creative way!

Learning in Action at Lansing Middle School!

Director of Teaching & Learning Miles Azzeh stopped by Lansing Middle School and saw some great learning happening across 6th and 7th grade classrooms!

Ms. Nelson’s 6th graders were working with fractions and finding the least common denominator.

Mr. Parsons’ 6th graders put their knowledge of Latin roots and affixes to work through a creative word-building activity.

Ms. Reed’s 6th grade literature students were busy reading—and eager to share how many books they’ve already finished this school year! After finishing a book, students add their own critique to a classroom board, complete with a picture and star rating.

Ms. Jacobs’ 8th graders were reviewing a recent assessment over Kurt Vonnegut’s Harrison Bergeron. The student consensus: they liked it, but it was definitely weird.

Vonnegut would be proud.

Great work, Lansing Middle School!

The Lansing Middle School 7th and 8th grade football games for today will hopefully still take place. Right now, the temperature reading is too high to play; however, the temperature is forecasted to drop quite a bit this afternoon. We expect that the index we use for heat to drop to a level where we can play at around 4:30 or so. We will be taking readings and will start when we are able.

On Monday, May 5th, Lansing Middle School hosted its 2nd Annual 8th Grade Math Fair! Families, staff, and community members explored a showcase of interactive student projects that connected math to real-world careers. Organized by educators Penny Wagner and Miranda Cote, 8th-grade students interviewed professionals from various industries—including construction, healthcare, culinary arts, and more—and presented their findings through essays and tri-fold displays. Guests were also entered into a raffle to win two Sporting KC tickets, generously donated by Kurt Austin, Senior Director of Communications for Sporting KC and one of our featured volunteers. Thank you to everyone who attended and supported our students’ exploration of how math powers the world around us!
