Lansing staff remain committed to keeping our students and community safe both inside our buildings and beyond the school day. As part of that commitment, Lansing Middle School will host a comprehensive cyber safety training for students and families on Monday, March 9, 2026, in partnership with The Sunflower House.
Based in Shawnee, Kansas, The Sunflower House is dedicated to preventing the abuse and exploitation of children and youth. Their team works directly with schools and communities to provide education and resources that help keep young people safe in today’s digital world.
Keeping Kids Safe Online
Online and social media platforms are constantly evolving, and while they provide opportunities for connection and creativity, they can also present real risks for children and adolescents. The Sunflower House’s Keeping Kids Safe Online presentation addresses the current digital landscape and equips students and families with practical tools and knowledge.
Topics will include:
Practical online safety tips and tools
The cyber-crimes reporting process
Internet and social media safety concepts, including gaming and popular apps
Current and local online trends
Artificial intelligence awareness
Online scams and exploitation
Human trafficking and CSEC/CSAM awareness
Other forms of digital communication risks
Understanding and influencing online algorithms
Mental health awareness, self-identification concepts, and how to seek help
Trauma-informed responses and support systems
The goal is not to create fear, but to empower students and families with information, awareness, and actionable strategies.
Student Sessions During the School Day
Age-appropriate sessions will be provided for LMS students:
10:00 a.m. – 6th Grade
12:00 p.m. – 7th Grade
1:30 p.m. – 8th Grade
Each presentation will last approximately one hour and is designed to meet the developmental needs of each grade level.
Guardian Opportunities to Participate
We strongly encourage district guardians to take part in this important learning opportunity. Guardians are welcome to attend a daytime session at LMS. In addition, a guardian-only session will be offered at 6:30 p.m. virtually.
The evening session will include more mature content and deeper discussion of risks, trends, and warning signs. Because of the nature of the material, guardians are encouraged to participate from a private location in their home.
The virtual link will be shared with guardians on the day of the event.
