Seventh-grade students in Lansing Middle School’s Family and Consumer Sciences (FACS) classes recently put their culinary skills to the test in a fun and flavorful competition led by teacher Stephanie Ogden.
Students worked in small kitchen groups to create their own gourmet Ramen dishes. Each team selected ingredients such as proteins, vegetables, sauces, and seasonings to craft a unique recipe that showcased their creativity and knowledge of flavor pairing.
The activity encouraged students to think critically about how different ingredients complement one another while also managing time and responsibilities within their kitchen teams.
To make the competition even more exciting, judges from outside the classroom were invited to evaluate the dishes. The judging panel included eighth-grade students Jeremiah Horvath and Bryan Skagg, who had previously taken the class, along with staff members Director of Teaching and Learning Miles Azzeh and Director of Communications and Marketing Sharon Burns. Dishes were judged based on flavor, creativity, and presentation.
The Gourmet Ramen Challenge served as an engaging way for students to apply classroom learning in a hands-on environment. Through this activity, they strengthened their culinary skills, collaboration, and confidence in the kitchen, all while having a great time!
Great work, Ms. Ogden and students!
