The LHS Choirs performed at the State Large Group Festival contest and had outstanding results! LHS had 3 choirs perform, the max permitted by KSHSAA. Each group, Concert Choir, Women's Ensemble, and the Legacy Singers, performed a set of standard choral literature for 3 judges on a rubric of 80 points, resulting in earning a rating of I - V. (I = outstanding, III = average, V = ineffective).
We are thrilled to announce that all 3 choirs not only earned a "I" overall rating, but the LHS Choirs average score over 9 rubrics was 76.3/80, far surpassing the benchmark of 69 points needed for a "I" rating! The accolades did not stop there as the Women's Ensemble and Concert Choir both earned a perfect rubric of 80 points from judges! This marks the 15th consecutive "I" earned by the LHS Choirs at this event!
Senior Shaliyah Wright, a member of each of the choirs, says, "This day was an incredible experience filled by our shared love for music and love for one another! We strive to inspire others to feel the passion and joy that music brings to us all. Our classroom is truly remarkable, and to witness the successful outcome of our hard work is amazing. I am honored to experience this with my peers and to continue to carry on our program's legacy."
If you would like to hear some of our work, our final concert of the year is on May 5th at 7pm in the LHS auditorium.

Lansing High School’s Mariah Neff Honored at Region 2 Kansas Teacher of the Year Banquet
Lansing USD469 was incredibly proud to see Lansing High School Special Education Teacher Mariah Neff recognized at the Region 2 Kansas Teacher of the Year Banquet in Topeka on Sunday, April 6th. Surrounded by peers and educational leaders from across the region, Ms. Neff was honored for her outstanding contributions to education and her unwavering commitment to students.
Ms. Neff was nominated last year and named Lansing USD469’s Secondary Teacher of the Year in 2024, an accolade that highlighted her impact both inside and beyond the classroom. Her dedication to her students, colleagues, and the Lansing High School community made her an exceptional candidate for this prestigious regional recognition.
As a Special Education teacher, Ms. Neff exemplifies what it means to create equitable, inclusive learning environments. She is widely respected for her ability to balance academic rigor with the social and emotional needs of her students. Her approach is rooted in deep care, practical strategies, and a belief in the potential of every learner.
"Ms. Neff builds opportunities for all students to be successful. Her impact goes well beyond the classroom; she creates school-wide opportunities for students to be involved, supported, and successful."
She fosters an environment where students not only thrive academically, but also feel seen, valued, and supported. From creating inclusive extracurricular opportunities to leading initiatives that benefit the entire student body, Ms. Neff ensures that every student feels a sense of belonging at Lansing High School.
Ms. Neff’s influence extends to her colleagues as well. She is a vital member of the Building Leadership Team, where she helps plan professional development, strategize student supports, and drive school-wide improvements. Her leadership is particularly noted during times when staffing is short or needs are high—she steps in without hesitation to coordinate paraprofessional support and offer guidance.
"I count on Mariah for support at the high school—she manages the paras when one is out sick, she is on the Building Leadership Team as the special education representative, and she supports both the students and adults daily. She also provides an outlet for staff to express their frustrations."
In a profession where collaboration and empathy are essential, Ms. Neff is a shining example of both.
We are incredibly proud to celebrate this moment with Ms. Neff and look forward to seeing her continued impact on the lives of students in Lansing.
Congratulations on this well-deserved honor, Ms. Neff!

Kansas State Department of Education’s Insight Podcast hosted by Kansas Commissioner of Education Dr. Randy Watson, will launch on Thursday, March 27.
This new podcast explores the people, policies, and progress shaping education in Kansas—topics that impact not only our schools but also our workforce, communities, and economy.
Our first episode, "From Slate to Screen: The Journey of Public Education," takes a step back in time to better understand how we got here. From one-room schoolhouses with slate boards to today’s dynamic, technology-driven classrooms, education in Kansas has evolved significantly. But what policies, reforms, and pivotal moments shaped this journey? And what lessons can we apply to the future?
We invite you to share this opportunity with educators and parents so they can engage with the insights and discussions that influence the future of Kansas education and workforce development.
Insight Podcast is available on Spotify and wherever you listen to your favorite podcasts.
New episodes will air the second Thursday of each month beginning in April. Please let me know if there is a particular topic you would like covered on a future episode.

Due to an unexpected mechanical issue with the pool heater, the facility will remain closed until further notice. We understand this may be an inconvenience and appreciate your patience. For the latest updates on the pool’s status, please visit the district website. If you have any questions or need further information, please contact: David Bresser - David.bresser@usd469.net
