Name It, Claim It: Learning in Action at LHS!
LHS Principal Dr. Alan Penrose is giving staff a chance to virtually step into one another’s classrooms through “Name It, Claim It,” a series highlighting the lessons, projects, and learning opportunities happening throughout Lansing High School.
This week’s feature takes us into Nick Black’s Direct Geometry class, where students took their learning beyond the classroom to discover how geometry shows up all around them!
Mr. Black shares what was happening:
“This is from one of my Direct Geometry classes. We had just finished learning about transversals and all the special angles they create when they cross parallel lines. After some classroom lessons, we took a field trip around the school to find real-world examples of these lines and angles so students could recognize that they see them every day already.
The chairs in the halls provided a perfect example with their design. We also found great examples in the commons area and gym.”

Lansing Lions Football to Host Military Appreciation Night
Lansing High School Football will host Military Appreciation Night on Friday, October 9, as the Lions take on the Basehor-Linwood Bobcats at Lansing High School. Kickoff is at 7:00 p.m.
As part of the evening, Lansing High School will honor the men and women who have served our country. All past and present service members will receive free admission to the game.
We hope our Lansing community will join us for a great night of football as we recognize and thank our military service members!

Lion Elite Wrestling Club to Hold Parent Meeting October 13
Families interested in youth wrestling are invited to learn more about the Lion Elite Wrestling Club during an upcoming parent meeting on Tuesday, October 13, at 6:30 p.m. in the Lansing Middle School Commons Area. Attendees should enter through the school’s main entrance.
Lion Elite is a USA Wrestling-sanctioned youth wrestling club welcoming athletes of all skill levels. The club’s season runs from November through March and includes practices, local and regional tournaments, and end-of-season events. The program focuses on wrestling technique while also emphasizing character, discipline, confidence, teamwork, goal setting, physical fitness, and personal growth.

Kids and Car Safety, a national nonprofit headquartered in Olathe, is inviting Lansing families to its Buckle Up & BBQ event on Sunday, October 4!
The family-friendly fundraiser will feature a craft BBQ competition, car show, touch-a-truck, silent auction, live music, cotton candy robot, and more. Proceeds support Kids and Car Safety's work to help keep children and pets safe in and around vehicles.

Putting HVAR knowledge to the test!
Lansing High School students Kenneth Kramer and Cameron Raney are gaining hands-on experience in the HVAR program at the KCKCC Pioneer Career Center (PCC).
Students recently learned how to test capacitors using multimeters to measure their electrical charge. Capacitors play an important role in heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems by helping components such as AC compressors and fan motors start and operate properly.

Lansing High School students MacKenzie Cigich, Wylie Bradshaw, and Hallie Dodd are developing hands-on skills in the CNA program at the KCKCC Pioneer Career Center (PCC).
Students recently practiced safely and efficiently making both occupied and unoccupied beds. Along the way, they learned important procedures for maintaining cleanliness and safety, including proper handling of linens and positioning the bed at a safe working height.
These hands-on lessons help students build the skills and attention to detail needed when caring for patients.

Mrs. Bruna shares what was happening:
“This is my Culinary Essentials class! This week, we were learning about proper dining etiquette. The students made a salad, spaghetti, and cupcakes, then properly set the table and ate together as a group. The activity gave students an opportunity to practice appropriate social skills, manners, and etiquette while working in a kitchen setting and dining together. We even played fancy restaurant music while they were eating. It was a fun lab!”

Lansing High School student Samuel Taylor continues to gain hands-on experience in the Construction program at the KCKCC Pioneer Career Center (PCC).
Construction students recently practiced working with rebar, learning how to create a grid layout and secure intersections with tie wire. Students used rebar pliers to grab, pull, twist, and cut the wire as they practiced proper techniques for securing the grid.

Construction students recently practiced working with rebar, learning how to create a grid layout and secure intersections with tie wire. Students used rebar pliers to grab, pull, twist, and cut the wire as they practiced proper techniques for securing the grid.

Sydney and her classmates recently practiced weighing and measuring ingredients using kitchen scales, measuring cups, and precise leveling techniques. Students learned how measuring by weight in grams or ounces can provide greater accuracy and consistency when preparing recipes.

KU Basketball’s Taylen Kinney Coming to Lansing
Lansing families and basketball fans have a chance to meet KU basketball player Taylen Kinney!
MainStreet in Lansing will host a Meet & Greet with Taylen Kinney on Saturday, October 3, beginning at noon at the dealership, located at 555 N. Main Street in Lansing.
Students and families interested in meeting the KU basketball player are invited to stop by and take part in the event.

Scientific notation is taking Lansing Middle School students around the world!
Eighth-grade math students in Miranda Cote’s class recently worked on a “Travel with Scientific Notation” project, choosing a country to research and comparing its data to the United States using scientific notation.
Students applied their math skills to real-world data by multiplying and dividing numbers to compare population sizes and examine how populations have changed over time.
To wrap up the project, students turned their research into travel brochures or posters, created either by hand or digitally using Canva.
Great work by Mrs. Cote and our 8th graders applying classroom learning in a creative way!

Lansing High School students Ethan Johnston, Gabriel Njoku, and Nathan Atwood are gaining hands-on experience in the Electrical program at the KCKCC Pioneer Career Center (PCC).
Students recently practiced cable and wire stripping, learning how to match the correct wire gauge to the stripping tool, remove the outer insulation, and protect the inner copper conductor from damage.
These hands-on lessons give students the opportunity to practice the precision and proper techniques used in electrical work.

Students recently learned about concrete formwork, including bulkheads, wall forms, and Symons forms. These systems are used to hold wet concrete in place and support the pressure it creates until the concrete cures and gains strength.
Students also worked with Symons Steel-Ply, a modular concrete forming system that uses steel frames and a durable plywood face.

The 2026 Mayor’s Christmas Tree Program is now accepting applications for Lansing families who may benefit from assistance this holiday season.
Applications are available at Lansing City Hall, 800 1st Terrace, or can be downloaded using the link below. Applicants must be Lansing residents and meet the program’s income eligibility requirements.
Completed applications and all required proof of income must be submitted to the City Clerk’s Office by noon on Friday, October 23, 2026.
Please review the application carefully for eligibility requirements and required documentation.

Lansing High School Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) students gathered before school this morning to participate in See You at the Pole, a student-led event centered around prayer.
Students gathered together at the flagpole before the start of the school day and posed for a group photo to mark the occasion.

Lansing High School student Samuel Taylor is building his construction skills through coursework at the KCKCC Pioneer Career Center (PCC).
Construction students recently practiced driving nails effectively, focusing on proper hand positioning, maintaining eye contact with the target, and using a smooth, controlled swinging motion. Students also learned how technique can help prevent common issues such as bent nails and split lumber.
Great job, Samuel! We look forward to sharing more of the hands-on learning opportunities our Lansing High School students are experiencing at PCC throughout the semester!
