Lansing USD469 Bond Information Series: Safety & Security

Listening to Our Community

Throughout the facility planning process, safety and security were consistently identified as top priorities.

Community feedback emphasized two important themes:

  • Schools must remain safe, secure environments for students and staff

  • Investments should be thoughtful, responsible, and fiscally aware

That feedback directly shaped the proposed bond.

Safety and security improvements are included in Question 1, the base facilities package.

Why Safety Investments Are Included

School safety today includes both physical infrastructure and integrated technology systems.

Many existing systems across the district are aging or require upgrades to remain effective and reliable.

The proposed bond would support improvements such as:

  • Secure entry enhancements

  • Access control systems

  • Building-level safety infrastructure upgrades

  • Technology systems that support monitoring and communication

For security reasons, specific operational details are not publicly outlined, but all improvements are focused on strengthening existing protections and modernizing aging systems.

Long-Term Maintenance & Planning

Safety systems require regular updates and maintenance cycles, similar to HVAC, roofing, and other infrastructure.

The district has implemented improved preventative maintenance tracking systems to:

  • Monitor equipment lifecycles

  • Reduce emergency repairs

  • Plan scheduled replacements

  • Improve response times

Modern security systems must be maintained as part of a long-term facility strategy, not addressed only when failures occur.

Supporting Safe Learning Environments

Safety investments support:

  • Controlled access to buildings

  • Improved monitoring capabilities

  • Clear communication systems

  • Infrastructure designed to protect students and staff

These upgrades are part of maintaining facilities that meet current safety expectations and standards.

A Core Facility Priority

Safety and security are included in Question 1 alongside:

  • Roof replacements

  • HVAC upgrades

  • Parking lot repairs

  • CTE expansion

  • Early childhood improvements

  • Playground updates

  • Demolition of Olive Street building

These are foundational facility investments designed to preserve and modernize district buildings.
