Lansing Intermediate School welcomed students and families on April 8 for an interactive and educational Emergency Services STEM Night.
The event featured local police officers, firefighters, and EMS professionals who guided students through a variety of activities designed to showcase how science, technology, engineering, and math are used in emergency response every day.
Students had the opportunity to learn from Lansing Police officers, including Officer Jori Bell and Officer Lexi Thomas. Participants explored fingerprint analysis and practiced measuring distances, skills commonly used in investigations.
The Lansing Fire Department, led by Captain Kirk Mackey, delivered several high-energy demonstrations. Students observed “flame jumping,” created a DIY fire extinguisher, and explored a chemical reaction activity known as a “reaction snake,” which mimics the expanding black snake effect seen in fireworks.
EMS professionals also played a key role in the evening’s learning. Sarah Beardsley and Lieutenant Blake Broockerd guided students through activities such as measuring heart rate and learning how to properly create a splint, important skills in emergency medical care.
The event was supported by several Lansing Intermediate School staff and board members, including Principal Martin Altieri, Abby Dietz, Pete Im, Jackie Kennedy, Ingrid Murphy, Suzanne Phillips, Aimee Scott, and Mechelle Settles, who helped facilitate the evening and ensure a meaningful experience for all who attended.
Emergency Services STEM Night provided students with a unique opportunity to connect classroom learning to real-world applications while interacting with local professionals.
