Laurie Holden's Academic Spotlight Graphic

This week’s Academic Spotlight shines on LIS 4th grade teacher Laurie Holden, who designed a fun and low-pressure way to help her students review key concepts before state testing these past few weeks. Her “Graffiti Review” gave students the chance to revisit both math and ELA standards in a creative format that helped them recall important terms and ideas in a more memorable way.

"I started graffiti review the day before testing as a low stress way to review all major standards for both math and ELA. It really helps with content-specific vocabulary that students might not use every day but will see on the state assessments. It is a great way to both show them how much they have learned and that they are ready to show what they know," Mrs. Holden said.

In addition to the students being engaged and having fun, their feedback showed they appreciated the change of pace and the opportunity to review in a hands-on, artistic way.

"I liked being able to doodle and be reminded about the important things," Jolie Reddell said.

"I liked how we wrote and drew on it, plus it was a good refresher," Nate Wempe said.

"It was an easy way to review and we could be creative at the same time," Norma Potter said.

Thank you, Mrs. Holden, for turning test prep into something students can enjoy and learn from. That’s not an easy task, and we’re lucky to have you!
