Lansing-area students who are interested in learning how local government works are encouraged to apply for the City of Lansing's Citizens' Academy, a seven-month program that provides an inside look at city operations and leadership.
The Citizens' Academy is designed to help participants better understand how city government serves the community. Through monthly interactive sessions led by city staff, participants will explore the roles and responsibilities of various departments, learn about city services, and gain insight into the decision-making processes that impact residents every day.
The program meets one evening per month from September through March, with a graduation ceremony held during a City Council meeting in April. Sessions are conducted in an informal setting and may include tours of city facilities.
Students who are at least 15 years old and are either Lansing residents, business owners, or residents within the Lansing School District are eligible to apply. Participants are expected to attend the monthly sessions and at least one City Council meeting during the program. To graduate from the academy, participants may miss no more than two sessions.
The Citizens' Academy offers more than just a behind-the-scenes look at city government. Graduates become eligible to serve on various city boards and commissions once they reach the appropriate age requirements, providing an opportunity to continue making a positive impact in the community.
There is no cost to participate, although class size is limited to 10 student participants each year.
Applications for the 2026-2027 Citizens' Academy must be submitted by September 1, 2026. Accepted applicants will be notified shortly afterward.
Applications are available online or can be picked up at Lansing City Hall, located at 800 First Terrace. For additional information, contact Public Information Officer Diana Dodd at 913-727-5488.
Students interested in civic leadership, community service, public administration, or simply learning more about how their city operates are encouraged to apply.
