Lansing High School KAY Club Students Present “Be the Spark” Community Project to Board of Education

Students from the Lansing High School KAY Club recently shared an exciting student-led project with the Lansing USD 469 Board of Education during the March 9th board meeting. Members of the LHS KAYs “Be the Spark” Committee presented plans to build a new nine-hole frisbee golf course on and around the high school campus that will be available for both students and the broader community to enjoy.

The project is made possible through a $6,000 “Be the Spark” grant, which supports student-led initiatives that promote healthy lifestyles and community engagement. The Lansing KAY Club applied for the grant to help fund the creation of the course, which aims to provide a free, accessible outdoor activity for people of all ages in the Lansing and Leavenworth area.

Students explained that the project was designed with both physical and mental wellness in mind. By creating a welcoming outdoor activity space, the course will encourage people to stay active while also bringing members of the community together.

Several local organizations and businesses are supporting the project as sponsors. Major sponsors include the Lansing Lions Club, Linaweaver Construction, Medicalodges, Twisted Steel LLC, and Precision Fence, Rail and Signs, Inc. Additional community members and organizations have also committed to sponsoring individual holes on the course.

Community members and businesses who would like to support the project can sponsor a hole on the course for $300. Sponsors will have their name displayed on a sign at the hole, recognizing their support of this community-focused project. Those interested in sponsoring a hole can contact Katelyn Johannes at Gapeachkj@gmail.com or Marissa Schimke at marissa.schimke@usd469.net.

Construction on the frisbee golf course is expected to begin shortly after spring break of 2026, with completion projected by the end of the school year. Students plan to host an opening event in May or early summer once construction is complete, followed by additional activities to build awareness and encourage community use of the course.

The course will feature nine holes located around the Lansing High School campus, providing a unique recreational opportunity for students during the school day as well as for community members outside of school hours.

Through the Be the Spark initiative, Lansing High School KAY Club members are demonstrating how student leadership can make a meaningful difference by creating opportunities that support wellness, connection, and community pride.
