Behind the Scenes: LHS Students Learn the Art of Stage Lighting

Lansing High School students recently had a unique, hands-on learning opportunity in their Technical Theatre class, thanks to Blake Vignery, who stepped in to lead an engaging lesson on stage lighting and design.

During the lesson, students explored how lighting plays a critical role in shaping mood, focus, and storytelling in live performances. Through hands-on activities and exposure to advanced industry vocabulary, students gained a deeper understanding of how thoughtful lighting design can elevate a production from good to unforgettable.

Blake brings a wealth of experience to this work. Now in his 20th year with Lansing USD 469, he serves as assistant band director, percussion director at Lansing Middle School and Lansing High School, pit orchestra conductor for LHS musicals, and auditorium supervisor. In addition to working closely with students as musicians, Blake collaborates with Bruce Moreland to provide lighting and sound for performance events across the district, making him a perfect fit to connect technical theatre concepts to real-world applications.

“II love getting to work with the students daily and to watch them grow as musicians, as well as, in their confidence to handle adversity. From the first day that my students pick up their instruments to hearing their last performance, I enjoy seeing them grow into confident adults,” Blake shared in a previous staff spotlight.

Experiences like this highlight the depth of learning opportunities available through Lansing’s fine arts programs, including those that happen out of the spotlight. The district is excited to continue growing and strengthening its behind-the-scenes fine arts offerings, giving students hands-on experiences that build skills, confidence, and creativity for the future.
