Michaela Fitzgerald, LHS Skills in Communication and Senior Composition Teacher

Question: How long have you worked in Lansing USD469?

Answer: I am starting my 7th and a half year here at Lansing High School

Question: Can you tell us a bit about yourself and the role you have within the school district?

Answer: Teachers often wear many hats, and my experience at Lansing has been no different. I have been a teacher within the English department for most of my career, but I did teach Art for one glorious year here at LHS, as I am endorsed in both Art and English Education. After taking a year and a half extended leave following the birth of my 4th child, I decided that while Art brings me much joy, I prefer to study and teach the art of language. I LOVE teaching Skills in Communication, especially, because bringing a kid out of their shell and is super rewarding. My personal teaching philosophy is to lead with kindness and empathy, cheer on students regularly, and bribe kids with lots of snacks. I am a 2007 graduate of Lansing High School, and I INVENTED the fruit loop cord. (One of my proudest and lasting accomplishments to date).

Question: What do you enjoy most about your role and the work you do in the school district?

Answer: I love this profession. The reward is showing up every day to faces of kids who may or may not be eager to learn and to bring out the very best in them regardless of their mood or circumstances. Every day is a challenge and a privilege to be a part of student growth.

Question: When you're not working, what hobbies or activities do you enjoy?

Answer: Cooking, playing with my kids, and advocating for a local arts-based nonprofit called LV Arts.

Question: Could you share a particularly heartwarming or memorable experience you've had while working with students or colleagues?

Answer: Recently, I ordered a pizza from a place in town, and when I gave them my name, there was a sudden gasp -- Mrs. Fitz! It was a former student of mine. It's fun to catch up with kids and to have genuine, lasting relationships with them. It's always nice to be remembered.

Question: What piece of advice would you like to offer to students to help them succeed and make the most of their educational journey?

Answer:  You never know when certain skills or knowledge will come in handy. Absorb everything you can, even if you think you'll never need to know it again. Learning for learning's sake can be extremely powerful.
