District Level Site Council Meeting Recap

On Monday, April 28, 2025, Lansing School District held its District-Level Site Council meeting at the Lansing District Office, a key component of our ongoing Strategic Plan. Superintendent Marty Kobza led the meeting, with important updates shared by district leaders, helping to keep our community informed about the exciting initiatives and progress happening within our schools.

The meeting began with introductions from staff and parent representatives from each building. Our Early Childhood team was represented by Becca Dalton (EC Principal) and Lindsay Conklin (parent); Lansing Elementary School was represented by Barb Robinson (teacher) and Carrie Pohl (parent); Lansing Intermediate School had Principal Martin Altieri, along with parents Jane Verran and Celeste Hoins; Lansing Middle School was represented by Principal Brooks Jenkins, parent Lisa Hope, and student Matthew Bone; and Lansing High School by Amber Bollin (parent) and student Jadyn Bollin. Ascendra Donald, representing Special Education, was also in attendance. Superintendent Kobza emphasized the council's important role in bringing together district leadership, staff, parents, and students to engage in meaningful conversations that support our shared vision for student success.

Director of Communications, Sharon Burns, provided an update on the district's ongoing efforts as part of the Strategic Plan, focusing on key initiatives like enhancing communication. These efforts include the expansion of two-way communication platforms to keep our families and community better informed. Burns also highlighted the district's growing Career and Technical Education (CTE) offerings, including the exciting addition of a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) program at Lansing High School, which will provide valuable career pathways for our students.

Director of Teaching & Learning, Miles Azzeh, then shared an update on the Kansas Education Systems Accreditation (KESA) process, which is central to our district’s continuous improvement. Azzeh outlined the district’s action plans, including a special focus on Early Childhood through grade 5, where the Kansas State Department of Education (KSDE) has introduced the Seal of Literacy requirement. This important initiative ensures that our youngest learners are meeting key literacy milestones, setting them up for success in their academic journey. The district is committed to providing all the resources and support needed to help our students achieve this critical goal.

The meeting concluded with an open discussion, where council members shared valuable feedback on topics such as the implementation of the Guaranteed Viable Curriculum (GVC) and distinctions in standards, resources, and curriculum. The council also discussed future topics that are of great interest to our community, including the district’s facilities plan, updates to the Virtual School, and the role of AI in our educational initiatives.

The next District-Level Site Council meeting will be held in October 2025, continuing the conversation on important topics and district initiatives that support our mission to provide an exceptional education for every student. We look forward to keeping our community involved and informed as we work together to shape the future of Lansing USD 469.
