On April 23, Lansing USD 469 welcomed a special group of “staff members” across the district for Take Your Child to Work Day. At the Early Childhood Center, students stepped into the shoes of educators and school staff.
Under the guidance of Early Childhood Principal Dr. Becca Dalton, participating students were given an assignment titled “A Day in the Life of Our School.” The goal was simple: help students explore what it means to work in a school through observation, participation, and creative expression.
Students were encouraged to experience the day through multiple lenses - visual, written, verbal, and even digital. Activities included drawing and labeling their parent or guardian at work, conducting short interviews to learn about daily responsibilities, and capturing moments from their day through photos and storytelling. Gentry Bell, a first grader, and Zane Waters, a second grader, embraced their roles as “little workers” in Mrs. Paige and Mrs. Jessica’s classroom.
To wrap up their experience, students reflected on their day by sharing what they learned and what they enjoyed most. Their responses highlighted an important takeaway: schools are filled with people doing meaningful work that supports students every day.
Take Your Child to Work Day provided a unique opportunity to connect learning with real-world experiences, even for the youngest learners.
