Third Grade Students Sprint to First Place in Sunflower State Challenge

Mrs. Heather Herrig's third grade students recently took on the Sunflower State Sprint, a statewide IXL challenge that encourages students to practice and strengthen their academic skills. Over the course of the month-long event, Herrig's class showed a commitment to learning that ultimately led them to an exciting first-place finish.

From January 29 through February 27, Mrs. Herrig's class participated in the Sunflower State Sprint, which encourages students to practice math and language arts skills using the IXL learning platform. Throughout the competition, Mrs. Herrig tracked student progress using a classroom leaderboard that calculated how many questions each student answered correctly while completing IXL assignments.

At the end of the challenge, the class celebrated several individual accomplishments. The top ten students received certificates recognizing their effort.

Three students stood out for their extraordinary dedication:

  • Addie Garcia - 1st Place: 7,337 questions answered correctly

  • Jackson Seebeck - 2nd Place: 6,712 questions answered correctly

  • Aniyah Hearn - 3rd Place: 6,115 questions answered correctly

While the individual achievements were impressive, the class's biggest victory came as a team.

On February 9, the class learned they were not even ranked in the top five statewide. Rather than feeling discouraged, the students doubled down on their efforts. When an updated ranking was shared on February 20, the class was thrilled to learn they had moved into first place.

Students continued working diligently both during school and at home to hold onto that top spot. In fact, 12 of the 22 students logged on the evening of February 27 after the school day ended to keep answering questions and secure their class's first-place finish.

To celebrate their accomplishment, the class will enjoy a pizza party from Luigi's in Leavenworth.

Mrs. Herrig shared that the challenge has been a wonderful experience for her students and a great example of how technology can support learning.

"I'm so happy our district decided to invest in IXL," she said. "It's full of engagement tools and has been a really great addition to my classroom for both teaching and learning."

Congratulations to Mrs. Herrig's class for their impressive Sunflower State Sprint victory!
