First grade teacher and students

As our first-year teachers complete their first semester in the classroom, we’re excited to share highlights of the great work they’re doing with students across the district. These educators have jumped right in building relationships, creating engaging learning experiences, and making a meaningful impact each day. Today, we’re highlighting Lansing Elementary teacher Ms. Lainey Felich and a writing lesson she recently led with her 1st grade classroom focused on facts and opinions.

To get started, Ms. Felich used a fun check-in and had students share what they remembered about facts and opinions. She then modeled the skill using a fish example as a class. Students worked together to write one fact sentence and one opinion sentence, practicing how to form complete sentences and use correct spelling.

Next, the class worked through a shark example together before students wrote their own fact and opinion sentences independently.

“This lesson helps them become better writers and feel more confident,” Ms. Felich shared. “We work on forming sentences, learning spelling, and sounding out words.”

Students also shared what they enjoy most about being in Ms. Felich’s classroom:

“I like how she’s nice,” said Logan.

“I like how she’s kind and lets us do coloring pages on Friday,” said Avery.

“The learning is mostly what I love,” said Della.

“I love learning sign language and the plants all around,” said Bailey.

Even though this is Ms. Felich’s first year in Lansing, she is already using effective teaching strategies and strong classroom management skills like a seasoned veteran. She’s building a classroom where students feel supported, enjoy learning, and continue growing as readers and writers.

Great work, Ms. Felich! Lansing is lucky to have you!
