Answer:  I began teaching in Lansing in 2007 (18 Years), building upon a rewarding career that started in 1988 after graduating from Emporia State University. Prior to joining Lansing USD 469, I dedicated 13 years to the Department of Defense Educational Activity (DoDEA), providing educational support to military families in Spain and Germany.

Question: Can you tell us a bit about yourself and the role you have within the school district?

Answer:  As a second-grade teacher at Lansing Elementary, I’m deeply committed to fostering a strong partnership between home and school. I firmly believe that a collaborative relationship between teacher, student, and parent is essential for success. I was honored to be recognized as the USD 469 2014 Elementary School Teacher of the Year, a testament to my dedication to student growth and well-being. I am on the Site Council and have served as President helping to bring back our Veteran's Day celebration. I am also a Mentor to a new teacher. My philosphy is my leadership style centers around patience, empathy, creativity, and resilience - qualities I strive to embody daily in all my roles. I’m passionate about creating a learning environment that isn’t just personalized, but truly effective, helping each student thrive and reach their full potential. Recognizing that students learn differently, I adapt my approach to meet individual needs, offering tailored support and encouragement along the way.

Question: What do you enjoy most about your role and the work you do in the school district?

Answer: For me, teaching is all about the kids. There’s truly nothing more rewarding than witnessing that moment of clarity in a student – that spark of understanding when a concept finally clicks. That’s why I teach! It's a privilege to genuinely care for my students, almost like family; I'm now teaching the children of former students, a testament to the relationships built over the years. I also deeply value the strong relationships I have with my colleagues (Especially my 2nd grade team) and appreciate working within a district that prioritizes good leadership. Ultimately, I hope to give back to the profession by mentoring other teachers and sharing the lessons I’ve learned.

Question: When you're not working, what hobbies or activities do you enjoy?

Answer:  I enjoy gardening, listening to music, and traveling to new places and spending time with family and friends.

Question: What is something unusual about you that most people don't know?

Answer:  I lived in Europe for 13 years in Germany and Spain and traveled to all the different European countries. I taught for Dodea schools overseas 13 years.

Question: Could you share a particularly heartwarming or memorable experience you've had while working with students or colleagues?

Answer: I’m incredibly proud of the “Good Citizen” awards I give daily, recognizing students who demonstrate honor, discipline, and leadership within the classroom. Hearing from former students years later, and even being invited to their high school graduation, where one valedictorian credited the award with shaping his commitment to citizenship, reinforces the lasting impact we can have.

Question: What piece of advice would you like to offer to students to help them succeed and make the most of their educational journey?

Answer: To the world you may be one person but to one person you may be the World. Always do your best! You can make an impact!
