Crochet is making a comeback, and students at Lansing Intermediate School are getting in on the fun!

For the third year, fourth and fifth-grade students at LIS are learning the art of crochet as part of their art classes with teachers Libby Stevenson and Aubrey Isbell. What started as a new classroom activity has become a favorite unit, giving students the opportunity to learn a skill they can continue using long after they leave the classroom.

Throughout the unit, students learn basic crochet techniques, practice different stitches, and discover how a simple hook and yarn can be used to create something entirely their own. Along the way, they develop patience, problem-solving skills, and perseverance as they work through the challenges of learning something new.

One of the things that makes this unit so special is the involvement of parent, grandparent, and community volunteers. Learning to crochet takes practice, and having extra hands in the classroom allows students to receive the individual guidance and encouragement they need.

We want to extend a special thank you to this year's volunteers: community member Jay Peters, Lansing USD 469 bus driver Kimberly Newton, and LIS parents Shelly Pray, Erin Bauer, Amanda Kelley, and Ashley Hatzinger. These individuals generously shared their time, patience, and talents to help our students learn a new skill.

Community Volunteers Needed!

As this popular unit continues, we would love to welcome even more volunteers into our LIS art classrooms!

If you know how to crochet and would be willing to share your skills with our fourth and fifth graders, we'd love to hear from you. You don't need to be an expert. You just need a willingness to help students learn, practice, and build confidence as they try something new.
