Lansing High School Advanced Placement (AP) Government students had the opportunity to step into the roles of presidential advisors during visits to the Harry S. Truman Presidential Library and Museum on October 21 and 22, 2026.

Accompanied by staff members Mr. Johnson, Mr. Hodges, Mrs. Scillieri, Mr. Rodvelt, and Mr. Basler, students participated in the White House Decision Center, an interactive educational experience designed to give students a firsthand look at the challenges and responsibilities of presidential decision-making.

Set in a recreated West Wing, the White House Decision Center challenges students to assume the roles of President Harry S. Truman and his advisors as they navigate significant moments in American history. The program emphasizes collaboration, critical thinking, communication, and leadership.

For this experience, Lansing High School students focused on President Truman's historic decision to desegregate the United States military. Students prepared for their assigned roles through research before participating in a series of activities that simulated the decision-making process.

Throughout the simulation, students conducted staff meetings, participated in two press conferences, developed recommendations for the president, and delivered a presidential briefing. Each activity challenged students to consider different perspectives, evaluate information, and make decisions under pressure.

The hands-on experience provided students with a deeper understanding of the complexities of government leadership while bringing their classroom learning to life.

Truman Library staff praised Lansing students for their preparation, participation, and performance throughout the simulations. Their professionalism and engagement reflected positively on Lansing High School and the broader Lansing community.

The experience was a valuable opportunity for students to apply their knowledge of American government in a meaningful, real-world setting.

Lansing High School looks forward to continuing this educational opportunity when AP U.S. History (APUSH) students visit the Truman Library in March 2027!
