This week, sixth-grade students at Lansing Middle School started learning about the Engineering Design Process and how engineers use creativity, problem-solving, and teamwork to solve real-world problems. Students learned that engineering is not always about getting the “right” answer on the first try. Engineers often have to test ideas, make changes, learn from what doesn't work, and try again.

Mini Engineering Challenge

Students put their engineering skills to the test with a 15-minute Mini Engineering Challenge! Students were placed into random groups and given a limited amount of time and materials to work together to create their solution.

Each group was given:

  • 20 note cards

  • 18 inches of tape

  • Scissors (optional)

With only 15 minutes on the clock, students had to quickly develop a plan, decide how to use their materials, and work together to complete the challenge. Because groups were randomly assigned, students also had the opportunity to practice working with classmates they may not normally choose to work with.

The time limit made the challenge exciting! Students had to communicate, listen to ideas, make decisions, problem-solve, and adjust their plans when things didn't go as expected. Most importantly, students experienced firsthand that engineers don't always get their design right on the first try. Sometimes the best solution comes from testing an idea, seeing what doesn't work, and making improvements.

What Students Practiced:

  • Using the engineering design process

  • Working effectively with a team

  • Communicating ideas and listening to others

  • Thinking creatively and solving problems

  • Making decisions with limited time and materials

  • Learning from designs that don't work the first time
