Students in Lansing High School’s Tech Theatre class recently had the opportunity to step into the world of costume design through a hands-on lesson led by paraprofessional Alyssa Papageorgiou, known to students as Ms. Georgi.
Under the direction of Tech Theatre teacher Mrs. Sarah DaMetz, students regularly engage in real-world learning experiences that reflect authentic theatre production. This recent lesson is one example of how those opportunities come to life in the classroom.
New to the district this year, Ms. Georgi has already made an impact behind the scenes of the spring musical Mamma Mia, where she has been assisting with costuming. Drawing on her background in theatre, she has worked closely with students to teach essential skills such as reading patterns, pinning and ironing fabric, hand sewing, and operating a sewing machine.
During a recent Tech Theatre class, Ms. Georgi shared her expertise with students by providing an introduction to costuming basics. The lesson gave every student the chance to practice using a sewing machine and apply what they were learning in real time.
By connecting classroom instruction to authentic theatre practices, students are building skills that will serve them both on and off the stage. Great
