Samuel Carbajal, Lansing Elementary Nurse
Question: How long have you worked in Lansing USD469?
Answer: This is my first year! Started in August 2025
Question: Can you tell us a bit about yourself and the role you have within the school district?
Answer: I began my nursing career in 2024 after serving seven years as an active-duty Army Officer. After completing my military service, I attended the University of St. Mary’s to transition into nursing. In addition to my school nursing role, I work part-time as a home health registered nurse. In the school setting, I provide initial health assessments and basic medical care to students, administer scheduled medications, and offer age-appropriate health education whenever opportunities arise.
Question: What do you enjoy most about your role and the work you do in the school district?
Answer: Children, especially at the elementary level, are incredibly authentic, and no two interactions are ever the same, which makes the work both enjoyable and occasionally challenging. I value the opportunity to expand my knowledge of pediatric care, an area I had not previously worked in, through my school nursing experiences. Additionally, I appreciate how much I have learned about school district operations and the roles each staff member plays in supporting students.
Question: When you're not working, what hobbies or activities do you enjoy?
Answer: Weightlifting, bowling, and I have 3 dogs, so walking them whenever possible!
Question: What is something unusual about you that most people don't know?
Answer: My first degree was in Sociology (and it helps a lot in nursing!)
Question: Could you share a particularly heartwarming or memorable experience you've had while working with students or colleagues?
Answer: I have been surprised with how a minor act can "break through" to students at times.
Question: What piece of advice would you like to offer to students to help them succeed and make the most of their educational journey?
Answer: Just try new things and see where it takes you. You'll carry every new experience forward through life and you'd be surprised how it helps you connect with others.
