Samantha Dale Staff Spotlight

As our first-year teachers begin their second semester in the classroom, we’re excited to share highlights of the great work they’re doing with students across the district. These educators have jumped right in building relationships, creating engaging learning experiences, and making a meaningful impact each day. Today, we’re highlighting Lansing Middle School science teacher Ms. Samantha Dale and a hands-on lesson she recently led with her 8th graders that focused on plate tectonics and land formation.

During the lesson, students used graham crackers to simulate Earth’s tectonic plates and the mantle beneath them. They explored the four most common plate interactions, including divergent, convergent (both continental and oceanic), and transform boundaries. By physically modeling these movements, students were able to better understand how Earth’s shifting surface leads to the formation of mountains, valleys, plateaus, and other landforms.

“I enjoy using hands-on activities like this because they help students make stronger connections to the learning objectives,” Ms. Dale shared. “Students take pictures of their work and place them into a digital worksheet so they can reference what they created while answering questions and reflecting on their learning.”

“Also…who doesn’t love to eat?” Ms. Dale added with a smile.

She also noted that the images can be used later to showcase student work during spring student-led conferences.

Students also shared what they enjoy most about the Ms. Dale’s class:

“There’s always a good vibe going on in here, which makes it great,” said Callen Thomas.

“This class is always energetic and fun to be in,” shared Domino Smith.

“Ms. Dale always lifts our spirits if we’re tired or down,” added Calvin Chastain.

This lesson highlights how hands-on instruction and positive classroom culture help students stay engaged while deepening their understanding of important science concepts. Thank you, Ms. Dale, for being an amazing teacher for our students!
