Lansing Intermediate Students Shine On and Off the Court with “Baddies” Basketball Team

This year marks an exciting milestone for a group of Lansing Intermediate students as the “Baddies” girls basketball team takes its first step outside of the Lansing Rec program and into more competitive play.

Coached by Megan Seebeck (Head Coach) and Jonathan Reddell (Assistant Coach), the team previously spent two seasons in the Lansing Rec league. During that time, it became clear the players were ready for a greater challenge. With only three teams in their division, the Baddies consistently dominated their competition, prompting the decision to explore a more competitive opportunity.

Last fall, the coaches held formal tryouts, resulting in the current roster and the team’s transition out of rec basketball. The move has already paid off. The Baddies recently won the Okun 6th Grade Division, Winter Session 1!

While the wins are exciting, the coaches’ goals extend well beyond the scoreboard. The program is intentionally focused on building confidence, developing a strong work ethic, encouraging teamwork, and helping the girls grow into kind, responsible individuals. Improvement and victories along the way are an added bonus.

Lansing Intermediate School Principal Martin Altieri recently attended one of the team’s games alongside fourth-grade teacher Mrs. Laurie Holden and shared his perspective on why opportunities like this matter.

“We recognize that our students' time at school is only a portion of their lives and that many are involved in after-school activities that they are very dedicated to. It is important for our staff to show interest in our students' time outside of school and be active within the community. Mrs. Holden and I decided to stop by the Baddies game Thursday evening and saw them cruise to victory. While winning is important, what we really loved seeing was their sportsmanship, teamwork, and the kindness they showed their teammates, coaches, opponents, and the referees. It is critical that the character traits we emphasize at school carry over to the rest of their lives as they mature.”

The Baddies’ success reflects not only their athletic ability, but also the values they demonstrate every time they step onto the court, making them a point of pride for Lansing Intermediate and the entire community.
