To help celebrate the last week of school, the Lansing Middle School Jazz Band delivered a surprise morning performance that left students both impressed and inspired. The dedicated band members arrived early to set up in the school commons, where they played a variety of jazz tunes as students arrived for the day.
The performance featured several student soloists who showcased their improvisation skills and created spontaneous, exciting melodies that elevated the performance to a level rarely seen at the middle school level. For many, it was the first time witnessing an ensemble perform with such musical maturity and finesse.
“The students in the jazz band are dedicated and work hard to perform at a high level,” said Mr. Edwards, the band director. “These students are so self-driven and naturally talented—they put in the work. I am simply here to help guide them in their musical journey.”
The LMS Jazz Band rehearses for just 15 minutes a day during enrichment time, yet their commitment has yielded impressive results. In March, the group performed at the Mid-America Nazarene University Jazz Festival, earning the highest score in the school’s history.
We are proud of the LMS Jazz Band and excited to see them continue to reach new heights. They are a shining example of the power of music education and student dedication in our community.
