On Monday, May 19, the Lansing School District held a retirement ceremony at the Lansing District Office to recognize five staff members who are closing out their careers in education. Surrounded by coworkers, district office staff, and board members Pete Im and Jeff Bollin, the ceremony was a chance to say thank you to Karen Averill, Ron Averill, Patti Boe-Cackler, Sara Mulford, and Dr. Sandy Van Cise for their many years of dedication to our students and families.
Mr. Kobza opened the event by pointing out what an impact these individuals have had on the district’s culture and long-standing academic success. “Superintendents and principals come and go,” he said, “but the people who built and kept this place strong are the ones we’re honoring today.”
Each retiree was recognized by a district leader who worked closely with them over the years.
Patti Boe-Cackler
Director of Student Services Ascendra Donald shared how Patti has always stepped up to help wherever needed—whether in special education, at athletic events, or behind the scenes supporting staff. “You’ve had a wider reach than just your assigned job, and that kind of support has meant a lot to the district,” Mrs. Donald said.
Lansing Intermediate School Principal Martin Altieri also thanked Patti for her help running events like the glow dance, working concessions, and always being available to jump in and support students and staff. “She’s one of the nicest people I’ve met,” Mr. Altieri said.
Sandy Van Cise
Mrs. Donald also recognized Sandy Van Cise, reflecting on the early days working together when Dr. Van Cise led the New Beginnings program. “You were someone I learned a lot from. You made a big difference with some of our toughest students, and that kind of leadership is hard to replace,” she said.
Mr. Kobza thanked Sandy for her long-term commitment to the students who needed the most support and welcomed her back anytime to share her experience and insight with new educators.
Karen Averill
Lansing Middle School Principal Brooks Jenkins spoke about Karen’s commitment to her role as the school librarian. “She brought energy and creativity to our library program,” he said. “Whether it was running a book club, starting a clothing closet for students, or helping with cheer and wrestling, Karen was always willing to go above and beyond.”
Ron Averill
Mr. Jenkins also honored Mr. Averill, calling him a behind-the-scenes mentor who always checked in on staff and supported the school in any way he could. “Ron has done everything from coaching to teaching to leading in the LEA. He’s someone I’ve always appreciated for his honest, thoughtful conversations,” Jenkins said. “It’s hard to picture the middle school without him.”
Mr. Kobza added that even before coming to Lansing, he knew Ron through his wrestling program. “If you were going up against Lansing, you knew it was going to be tough,” he said. “His athletes were disciplined and respected him.”
Sara Mulford
Lansing Elementary Principal Dr. Jennifer Kolb described Sara’s classroom as a place of kindness, humor, and high expectations. “She’s been a teacher, a guide, and a support system for so many kids,” Kolb said. “Students told me she’s funny, helpful, nice—and not that old. That says a lot.”
Final Remarks
Mr. Kobza closed the ceremony by thanking the group again. “We know what kind of hole it leaves when people like this leave a district,” he said. “You’ve all made a lasting difference, and we hope you know you’re always welcome here—whether that’s to sub, help out, or just stop by.”
Each retiree received a gift basket donated by MAPS, Inc. and Leavenworth Paper Supply , and many stayed afterward to visit with staff and guests.
