Academic Spotlight

This week’s academic spotlight shines on first-year Kindergarten teacher Sarah Barth and her wonderfully engaging activity, where students worked together to create fresh lemonade while documenting each step using sequencing words like first, next, then, and last. They took turns stirring, squeezing lemons, and observing the changes as ingredients combined, reinforcing both literacy and science concepts.

“This activity is a great visual and hands-on way for students to practice sequencing and following steps in order,” Mrs. Bath said. “It was also a great opportunity to talk about science concepts such as mixing and dissolving.”

This was not only a fantastic lesson to observe but also an essential part of our Strategic Plan to create meaningful, real-world connections in education. By incorporating interactive experiences into daily instruction, our teachers provide students with opportunities to develop academic and critical thinking skills, fostering deeper comprehension and lasting learning connections.

Beyond the learning, it was apparent that students absolutely loved the experience, with many enthusiastically sharing their thoughts:

“This is the best lemonade I have ever made!”

“This was really fun!”

Mrs. Barth also shared a frequent comment heard in the classroom: “I love this school!” or “This is my favorite class!”

By mixing (like the lemonade!)  literacy, science, and hands-on learning, this activity not only reinforced sequencing skills but also created a memorable and meaningful experience for students—just one more example of Lansing USD 469’s commitment to innovative and engaging education.

Great job to Mrs. Barth for making learning fun, interactive, and impactful!
