Third-Graders at Lansing Elementary School Hold Continent Fair
On Wednesday, May 17th, Lansing Elementary third-graders filled the gymnasium to host the annual Continent Fair. Third-grade teachers have dedicated time over the past 2-3 weeks to allow their students to research and learn about various continents, countries, and cultures worldwide. The fair was a result of all of their hard work and showcased all they have learned.
The Continent Fair incorporated reading, writing, geography, and social studies. As part of their curriculum, each of the third-grade classes was assigned a continent to explore in-depth. Several of the larger continents were divided into two parts. Throughout the process, students also studied the world's oceans, which is also part of the third-grade Kansas State Standards for Social Studies.
Once the continent research was completed, each student was assigned a specific country within their continent to learn more about its unique characteristics. Students then created tri-fold presentation boards showcasing what they had learned. These boards served as a visual representation of their research and featured the country's flag, leaders, a famous person, and a map highlighting the capital city. Some students even included information about local wildlife and favorite traditional foods.
On the day of the Continent Fair, all third-grade classes gathered in the gymnasium, taking turns to showcase their boards and share their knowledge with their classmates. The classes rotated every ten minutes to hear their peers present their particular country.
Through the third-graders' research, tri-fold presentation boards, and interactions, they displayed an understanding of the world's cultures.
Wonderful work to all of our third-grade teachers and students!
