Congratulations to Our Lansing High School Girls Swim Team Who Are Once Again UKC Champions!
On Tuesday, May 9th, Lansing High School hosted the UKC Swim Championships, and our team successfully defended the title. Since the UKC began, the swimming trophy has not left Lansing - both boys' and girls' teams have won every year.
Final team scores:
- Lansing – 259.5
- Seaman – 209
- Leavenworth – 197
- DeSoto – 145
- Shawnee Heights – 134
- Basehor-Linwood – 124
- Piper – 109.5
- Topeka West – 23
- Turner – 21
"I did not expect to win by 50 points," said Coach David Bresser. "I thought it might come down to the last event, the 400 Free Relay. Throughout the season, Leavenworth has been right on our heels, and Seaman was ahead of us at a few meets.
Medalists:
- 200 Medley Relay – Champions (Makaila Hayes, Hannah Platt, Mary Archambault, Avila Verzola)
- 400 Free Relay – Champions (Mary Archambault, Kylee Walter, Avila Verzola, Makaila Hayes)
- 100 Backstroke – Champion – Makaila Hayes (Fr)
- 200 Freestyle – Runner-up – Makaila Hayes (Fr)
- 200 IM – 3rd Place – Mary Archambault (Fr)
- 50 Freestyle – Runner-up – Avila Verzola (Fr)
- 100 Butterfly – Runner-up – Mary Archambault (Fr)
- 100 Backstroke – 3rd place – Kylee Walter (Fr)
- 100 Breaststroke – 3rd place – Hannah Platt (Sr)
Bresser said they knew it might be close going to the meet since both Seaman and Leavenworth had some excellent top swimmers. "Seaman won most of the individual events (6 of the 8 events), but our depth and strength in the middle places put us over the top. There were so many good swims from our returners who moved up and scored points in the 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th places."
"Our freshmen may have led the way at the top, but our hardworking upper-classmen proved to be the deciding factor. Outstanding performances that helped us win the meet convincingly came from: Mariah Rickert (Sr), CaitlynnKankelfitz (Jr), Adrian Escalante (Jr), Bookelin Pierce-Connel (Jr), and Anna Yedlinsky (So)."
Congratulations to Coach Bresser, who was one of three coaches to share the Coach of the Year honor.
The team will head to state in Topeka during the weekend of May 19th with our most qualifiers ever. Senior Hannah Platt will graduate in the morning and head to state to swim that afternoon.
