Discovering Future Careers: 6th Grade Students Hold Successful Career Fair
On Monday, May 1, and Tuesday, May 2, sixth-grade students in Kathy Baughman and Rachel Szmed's classes held career fairs. This event was the culmination of a project that started three weeks ago, where students answered a series of questions in Xello, an online platform that helps students discover their career paths. Students received a list of their best career choices based on their interests, skills, and values. They selected their preferred career option and began their research. Through this process, they learned how to evaluate and cite sources correctly, an essential skill for any future career path. The next step was to create a paper based on their research, including a work cited page. Once their piece was complete, they made a trifold board with pictures explaining their career choice.
On Monday, Ms. Szmed's class held its career fair; and Ms. Baughman's class held theirs on Tuesday. Students from each class visited the other and had passports that needed to be filled out by asking questions and learning about each other's careers. Ms. Baughman and Ms. Szmed also invited parents, administrators, and school board members to attend the event. This activity encouraged students to be curious, engaged, and informed about different career options.
Congratulations on a job well done to Ms. Baughman, Ms. Szmed, and our six-grade students!
