Lansing High School Choirs Earn Outstanding Ratings at KSHSAA State Large Group Contest
Lansing High School Director of Choral Activities Brian White and his students are celebrating a remarkable achievement at the Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA) State Large Group contest held last week at Lawrence Free State High School. Mr. White described the competition as their classroom's "state assessment" and the "state championship game."
Of the fifteen 5A-6A schools participating in the competition, Lansing High School was one of only three to earn an "I - Outstanding/Exemplary" rating on all nine rubrics.
Mr. White is incredibly proud of his students' achievement:
"This is a remarkable feat at any time, but even more so given the fact that Lansing HS is by far the smallest school at the site KSHSAA assigns us to, and the majority of schools performing before us are more than double the size of Lansing HS," said Mr. White. "Furthermore, most "I"s earned in music contests are a 69 or 70. The average score of our 9 rubrics was 75.5/80.
To witness this as the students listened and reflected brought tears to my eyes in the classroom. These reactions validated my belief that there is not much more affirming than the acknowledgment of the quality of one's product/work/actions. It never gets old and motivates everyone, regardless of age or job, to continue to showcase the very best that they have to offer. They hear it from me daily, but for them to hear it from someone else quite literally meant the world to them in that moment."
