Lansing Intermediate School Fourth-Graders Take Local Field Trip to Cereal Ingredients, Inc.
Did you know that all the “dust” on Doritos is made right here in Leavenworth? Before winter break, fourth-grade students went on a local field trip to Cereal Ingredients, Inc. (CII).
"Learning about regions is a significant part of the social studies curriculum, so it was exciting to experience how resources and products are developed in the Midwest region," said fourth-grade teacher Mrs. Laurie Holden. "We first learned that Cereal Ingredients, Inc. does not produce cereal! Cereal is a multi-meaning word, and the cereal involved in the factory is simply different grains used to make products."
CII make over 800 products they sell as ingredients to other companies that use them to produce their products. Some of the more well-known products that students learned that they make are the red dots that go on Apple Jacks, both Nacho and Cool Ranch dust that goes on Doritos, the topping on the tops of pop tarts, and plant-based proteins for the impossible burgers! The fourth-grade students and teachers were given a tour of the entire facility and learned about all the different jobs that the company hires - from the factory line workers to the research and development scientists that create new products for companies.
