LHS Senior, Jake Kotzman, Receives Gold Key and Three Silver Keys for Scholastic Art & Writing Awards
Lansing USD469 is incredibly proud of senior John "Jake" Kotzman for receiving a Gold Key and three Silver Key Awards in this year's Scholastic Art and Writing Awards. This is the second year in a row that Jake has received a Gold Key, and his winning piece will go on the national level of adjudication in New York City.
Scholastic Art & Writing Awards recognize "young artists and writers, filmmakers and photographers, poets and sculptors, video game artists and science fiction writers" and are presented by the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers. The Alliance's mission is "to identify students with exceptional artistic and literary talent and present their remarkable work to the world through the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards." Nearly 230,000 original works in 28 different categories of art and writing were submitted in 2021. Each of Jake's submissions received recognition this year, which is a tremendous accomplishment:
- "The Test" - Poetry - Received a Silver Key Award
- "The Midway Hotel" - Science Fiction & Fantasy - Received a Silver Key Award
- "Perfect Flaws" - Science Fiction & Fantasy - Received a Silver Key Award
- "Green is Best" - Flash Fiction - Received a Gold Key
All works that receive a "Gold Key" Award at the Regional level are automatically advanced to the national level of judging in New York City. The pieces will be judged by "an impressive panel of creative–industry experts to receive National Medals, including Gold Medals, Silver Medals, American Voices & Visions Medals, Gold Medal and Silver with Distinction Portfolio Medals, and Special Achievement Awards."
