Lansing High School Debate Team Has Successful Showing in the KSHSAA State 2 and 4 Speaker Competitions!
This past weekend, the Lansing High School debate team traveled to Wichita to compete in the KSHSAA state 2 and 4 speaker competitions.
Coach Larissa Maranell reported the competition was tough, but our team persevered.
"At 2-speaker, the teams faced a pool of judges impacted by Covid, which caused an intense aff side bias, and one team was unable to compete due to a partner's absence. Despite this, Senior Bailey Campbell and partner Sophomore Andresea Prieto won 2/6 debates, Junior Sam Schmidt and partner Sophomore Liam Johnson won 3/6 debates in prelims, Senior Gage Thompson and partner Liam Baragary won 4/6 debates - becoming the 10th seed and missing a BRUTAL break to the bracket by speaker points.
At 4-speaker, the team of Junior Nikki Svedarsky, Junior Mike Im, Junior Austin Davis, Senior Ryan Corrigan, Sophomore Jack Corrigan, and Sophomore Alyssa Parker, took 2nd in the round robin tournament, winning 10/12 debates losing only to to the 1st place team Blue Valley Southwest on either side of the topic."
Well done, Lansing Debate Team and Coach Larissa Maranell!
