Lansing Girls' Swim Team Raises Awareness for Mental Health through "Green Out" Meet
The Lansing Girls' Swim Team hosted their first ever "Green Out" meet against Leavenworth on Friday, April 23, 2021 to raise awareness for mental health.
"May is Mental Health Awareness month, so in preparation, we gave each swimmer from every team a green swim cap that said 'You Are Not Alone” #SwimmersForAwareness'," said Coach David Bresser. "We did a short presentation about the mental health services and resources, then we talked about the green ribbon campaign. Anyone was able to come grab a green ribbon for their shirt or backpack to show they are taking care of themselves and may be a resource for others."
According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) website, Mental Health Awareness month is "celebrated to help fight stigma, provide support, educate the public, and advocate for policies that support people with mental illness and their families." Millions of people in the United States are affected by mental illness each year, and "it is important to measure how common mental illness is, so we can understand its physical, social, and financial impact - and so we can show that no one is alone."
