Second Graders in Mrs. Meyers' Class Learn with Halloween Theme!
Second grade teacher, Mrs. Sara Meyers, has had a blast the past few weeks incorporating a Halloween theme into her students' curriculum. First, she started with a "witch" theme, and the students each created witch legs to help them learn about action verbs.
"They read two "witch" books and had to hunt for different action verbs that the witch did," said Mrs. Meyers. "We created a word wall on the board, and then each student had to pick their own witchy action verbs and add them to our witch tights. The students came up with words like fly, zoom, cackle, laugh, etc."
Next was a writing unit involving a pumpkin theme.
"We created our own pumpkins and each student's is different. We then learned more about descriptive writing and named our one of a kind pumpkin, then wrote several sentences describing our pumpkins (how many teeth they had, the shape of them, and how they made us feel)."
For the second year in a row, Mrs. Meyers had her class create pet pumpkins. Each student was able to pick their own pumpkin for "Mrs. Meyers Pumpkin Patch" and were asked to take it home to decorate it.
"Their job is to take care of their pumpkin for the week and write and draw about what their pumpkin did for the day."
The students also conducted pumpkin experiments and pumpkin investigating, where they studied the sizes of the pumpkins, the seeds, etc.
This week the students have a writing assignment titled "If I were a Jack O Lantern….." and will be learning about Dia De Los Muertos to create their own hand drawn sugar skulls.
