Lansing High School Student, Grace Umbarger, Studies Crime Scene at KCKCC
It's a CRIME SCENE!
Andrew Whitford, Criminal Justice Instructor at Kansas City Kansas Community College, has been creating a crime scene for his students in criminal investigations.
The Criminal Investigation course is where students will be called in to investigate a murder, using what they learn in each class. The scenario begins with a briefing from a patrol officer who was first on-scene and spoke to the original 911 caller.
Each student separately takes on the role of lead detective and must provide regular investigative updates and an investigative plan for moving forward. Depending on their investigative plan, they will be provided with new information/evidence upon which to move their investigation forward. Lansing High School senior, Keilah “Grace” Umbarger, is enrolled in the KCKCC Criminal Justice Program and took part in this learning opportunity last week.
Eventually, with the right steps, she will be conducting a virtual interrogation and writing/executing search warrants. With some thought and by paying attention in class on how to investigate, she should be laying a murder charge.
