March 17, 2020 7:30 pm - A message from Superintendent Dan Wessel regarding school building closures
Lansing Families,
The way we respond to challenges like the one we face today with COVID-19 will help to define the way our children grow and learn. It is important to look for opportunities to grow as an individual, school and community.
Today at a Press Conference at 4PM Governor Laura Kelly cancelled in-school learning for the rest of the year. We understand that there are countless questions at this time about what that means. We still have many unknowns as we move forward that will be answered in the coming weeks as we learn more about our changed requirements. For events that we traditionally have during the end of the year like graduation, we will discuss ways to make them as special as possible. We don’t have any timeframes we can work within at this time, so moving forward we will have those discussions as we know more information.
As a part of the school closure, Governor Kelly will have each school district develop a continuous learning (CL) plan that will help our students grow through the end of the school year. Lansing Schools began those conversations before Spring Break and will continue to formulate a plan based on the recommendations being sent out tomorrow at 5PM from the Continuous Learning Task Force that has been convened at the state level. The continuous learning plan will be tailored to what best serves our Lansing Community and could include any combination of face-to-face in very small groups if it is deemed safe, online learning, and packet learning.
Lansing Schools moving forward this week and next will look like:
- Wednesday: Administration will convene at 9:30 to continue conversations about learning for the rest of the year.
- Thursday: We will meet to discuss the recommendations provided by the Continuous Learning Task Force from the state and continue to revise our plans.
- Week of 3/23: We will develop our own Lansing Continuous Learning Plan to meet the requirements of the Continuous Learning Task Force moving forward.
During the week of March 23, Lansing Schools might need some additional information from you about the way education will look moving forward. If we send out surveys asking for information, please take the time to fill them out.
In addition, we are planning on beginning our Food Service Drive-By meals for students in need on Monday of next week. We are working with some local resources to possibly provide family meals during this time as well, more on this as I know it.
