Lansing Elementary School students celebrate Read Across America during first week in March!
Lansing Elementary students observed Dr. Seuss's birthday, also known as "Read Across America Day," on March 2, 2020. According to awarenessdays.com, "Read Across America Day is a yearly observance in the USA inaugurated by the NEA (National Education Association). It is held on the school day that is nearest to 2 March, Dr Seuss birthday. Theodor Seuss Geisel was an American artist, book publisher, animator, poet, a political cartoonist as well as an author. He is best known for authoring over 60 children’s books."
Students in Lansing Elementary School celebrated the rest of the week with a theme each day:
- Monday: "Cat in the Hat" - Wear a hat
- Tuesday: "One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish" - Wear red and blue
- Wednesday: "There's a Wocket in my Pocket" - Wear a shirt with pockets
- Thursday: "Horton Hears a Who" - Complete a random act of kindness
- Friday: "Bartholomew and the Oobleck" - Wear green
Teachers also brought in guest speakers to the classrooms, including Senator Kevin Braun, Lansing Police officers, parents, administrators, and more.
In Mrs. Jennifer Leitsch's classroom, each student read his/her favorite Dr. Seuss book, wrote a silly rhyme, practiced addition with a Cat in the Hat color code, and rhymed words to celebrate.
Second graders got a wonderful surprise on Thursday, March 5th, when the Lansing High School Teaching and Training pathway students visited each room to read a Dr. Seuss book and teach a fun lesson.
