Lansing High School seniors take first in Bridge Building Competition and are headed to Chicago for International Competition!
Lansing High School Advanced Studies students Cam Burns, Logan Hope, Isaiah Sterling and Alyssa Wiegers have taken first for the second year in a row at the Roo Builders Bridge Building Competition on the UMKC campus. Judging at the event was based on the following criteria:
- 20 Points: Bridge Meets Size Specifications
- 30 Points: Load Carrying Capacity Prior to Failure
- 20 Points: Load/Weight Efficiency Ratio Prior to Failure
- 15 Point: Video of Design and Construction
- 15 Points: Aesthetics
The students have been working on their designs since September and were able to test them in Pierson Auditorium on the UMKC campus on Saturday, February 8, 2020. The win qualified the team to the Forty-Third International Bridge Building Challenge to be held on May 9, 2020 in Chicago. The team was also recognized and given a $150 scholarship per student at the 2020 Discover Engineers Conference in Kansas City on Friday, February 21, 2020.
"We are so excited to win this competition for the second year in a row," said Mrs. Julie Hinckley, Lansing High School Gifted Facilitator and Advanced Studies teacher. "The students did a fantastic job designing, building, and testing their bridge. We look forward to competing at nationals in Chicago."
