Lansing High School makes history with first-ever girls wrestling team
Lansing High School had its first-ever girls wrestling team this year, led by coach Hailey McCleary. The team was made of seven athletes, ranging in age from freshman to junior. Lansing High School junior, Whitney Aseyo, qualified for state in her first year of wrestling.
"I am very proud of the girls for stepping out and stepping up to create history and be the first ever girls wrestling team of Lansing High School and the Lansing community," said Coach McCleary. "I know many young girls that look up to them and have started wrestling this year because they know they can one day be a part of this special team. I am very blessed and excited to be a part of this team that has changed and shaped the future of wrestling not only in Lansing but in the state of Kansas. I want to give a shout out to Hector Porter for helping to spread the word about girls wrestling in the high school and for volunteering his time to help me coach the girls. I also want to thank Coach Flynn for giving me the opportunity to be a part of this program and be the first girls wrestling coach in Lansing. We are all looking forward to state and continuing to grow our program. Go Lions!"
Whitney will be competing at the state tournament on February 27 against other girl wrestlers who have qualified in Kansas. Go to www.trackwrestling.com and search for that event date in Kansas if you would like to follow the results.
Great job Coach McCleary and all the girl wrestlers!
